Abstract

This study sought to reveal the occult in the works of DiTerlizzi and Black. Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions: 1. How is occultism presented in Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black' The Spiderwick Chronicles along: a. Divination; b. Magick or Paganism; c. Spiritism? - 2. How is occultism exemplified contextually thru the following literary devices: a. Characterization; b. Motif; c. Symbol? - 3. What are the occult themes and their implications to contemporary culture? The content-analysis approach was used to read, understand and critically analyze the occult themes and signs and phenomena. Careful examination of the images, string of words, characters, setting and connotations of the occult was applied. The Formalistic Approach was used to analyze the occult contents. Finally, the aspects, insinuation and presentation of the occult were used to understand its place in contemporary culture.
