Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the commentary on Philippine society as portrayed in the selected short stories of Leonicio P. Deriada. Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions: 1. What are the significant historical and socio-cultural trends in contemporary Philippine society during the 1970's that influenced short story writing in the Philippines during this period? 2. How are these trends reflected in the short stories of Leonicio P. Deriada? 3. What are the techniques employed by the writer in enhancing the meanings of his short stories?
