Abstract
The purpose of this research is to contribute to the arcade materials on indigenous culture of the Igorot particularly that of the I-Sagada. Its aim was primarily to collect indigenous songs, rhymes and chants in the life cycle of the I-Sagada; that the childhood, adolescence, marriage and death. It is the belief of the researcher, that if we are to appreciate our heritage, it is necessary that we have a distinct identity as a cultural being. The songs, rhymes and chants form part of such an identity.
This research work entitled “indigenous songs, rhymes and chants in the life cycle of the I-Sagada” describes the life cycle of the I-Sagada in terms of songs, rhymes and chants. Specifically, it aimed to answer the following problems: 1. What are the different indigenous songs, rhymes and chants accompanying the life cycle of the I-Sagada? 2. What values are derived from there indigenous songs, rhymes and chants? This study is important to the I-Sagada and to the students of literature as well: to the i-Sagada because he will find his true identity in the songs, rhymes and chants and at the same time be proud of his heritage; to the literature student who will find aesthetic appreciation of the indigenous culture to be as important as culture of other Filipinos or foreigners. The descriptive survey method of research was used in this study. Data and information were gathered through informal interviews, collection of songs, rhymes and chants by students and a lot of library work. Likewise, the participant observation and the socio-cultural approach were used.
