Urban problems within the first 1,635M stretch of Sheikh Zayed Road pedestrian ways
    (2021-10) Baidiango, Rhodem Dennis R.
Being in Gulf region, the weather condition of the City of Dubai is known to be hot and arid, very humid, especially during summer. The main road that used to be two lanes on both sides now has 6-7 lanes on both sides, which dictates the creation of link bridges to provide continuous pedestrian routes. Aside from the main superhighway, 2-3 lanes of service roads were also next to the pedestrian ways Adding to it is the development happening to its built environment. This created several urban problems over time within the pedestrian ways of the area of study. Identifying the urban problem, which is becoming a daily challenge to the mobility, connectivity, and walkability of pedestrians is one of the focuses of the study. In addition to these, climate condition, air pollution from car fumes from cars and inhouse gases and noise pollution from vehicles, and the heat island from the vast asphalt road are among the issues with the are of study. As an effect, residents and workers limit their time to go out or not to go out at all and purely depends on their cars. In time, the pressing issues also resulted in health problems. The study was conducted to assess it and find a solution to the existing problems. The researcher used the descriptive naturalistic observation method in this research upon gathering data and being evaluated using the DUDC and other laws. The top 4 urban problems were identified, namely the obstruction, the travel path condition, the climate issue, and the safety issue. Upon knowing the problem, the researcher digs deeper to understand the cause and effect of the urban problems that were also highlighted in this study. And upon evaluating the area of studies pedestrian ways, the researcher found out that not most of the existing condition follows the DUDC guidelines until the end of the research period. The research outcome proves that the area of study requires an enhancement to its physical environment and to answer to the challenge brought by the rapid urbanization within the area of the study. The researcher concludes that urban problems like obstruction, travel path condition, safety, and climate affects the lives of every pedestrian who uses pedestrian ways within the area of the study, and the effects of the identified urban problems don’t only affect the pedestrian itself but also affect the area around it. It affects the environment and causes health issues to the people around it. It must be monitored closely, and existing laws must be implemented correctly to avoid the problems and effects to its users. And also, not all the existing pedestrian links and pedestrian ways are safe, comfortable enough, able to give reason to walk, and interesting enough for every pedestrian user. It does require enhancement in order to achieve the four reasons to walk. It is recommended to have a strict and proper implementation of the existing code, revisit the code, make amendments to it to bridge the existing gap and in order to resolve the urban problem. Since most of the built environmental already existed when the DUDC was published, this research and the results of this research will serve as a wake-up call to help the government and its governing body to be aware that the challenge is not yet finished. It is recommended that all laws must be followed equally, and DUDC must have a governing body or a third-party evaluator who will be liable to countercheck such urban problems. Surely the effects of the identified problems will start disappearing. Whatever is left will be dealt with for as long as the long-term goal guides it for a better quality of life, a better city that is a more sustainable city. And also, the aim of the city is to bring back the carbon emission zero by 2050 and to be amore pedestrian-friendly city. It is very timely to provide a project base layer of intervention to mitigate the urban problems. It is also a basic need of every human being to have a safe environment. Having pedestrian ways that give a reason to walk, a safe walk, an interesting walk, and a comfortable walk is a must but should not be a limited only to it. It must also promote sustainability and efficiency to its users.
