Item Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC)'s urban open spaces: A quality-driven optimization(2021-10) Buraga, Larry M.This research presents the rationale of exploring the idea of quality-driven optimization of Dubai World Trade Center's urban open space within a walkable campus. DWTC's public open space is the heart of the complex and is the main link to the different buildings within the vicinity. The physical area of urban open spaces is sufficient to welcome visitors and act as an extension for external social interaction and activities. After long hours of hard work and participation in in-person events, a multi-functional open space can also be an efficient way to relax and unwind within the heart of the city. However, it has several obstacles, including a lack of appealing features that suit the demands of visitors to DWTC and a lack of deliberate design to promote and serve social gatherings between users and the space. Furthermore, although connection and accessibility are being addressed, they do not provide a satisfactory answer to physical connectivity, pedestrian mobility, or a sense of arrival. Many studies indicate that urban open spaces are an essential element that positively impacts people in an urban context. For the study, only outdoor space's current status and challenges in an urban context are identified and considered in the research scope. Using a quantitative approach, through site observational data, surveys and interviews, data collection online, and empirical aspects, the researcher determined the current challenges and evaluated the impact of the current challenges to the surrounding and the acceptability of urban open space in relation to aesthetic, functionality and experience. Furthermore, a criteria checklist is demonstrated on how the public open space must be of high quality, acceptable, and should be. Public space through the lens of the guideline's checklist is also determined. A well-designed public open space within the populated area promoted social interaction, economic value for the surrounding neighborhood and property owners. The site is undeniably one of the most prime locations in Dubai. The location itself has always been at the heart of Dubai. Aesthetic has a vital role in creating open spaces to invite people to use it. Functions of open space should promote connectivity with the other elements of the urban fabric, and accessibility of the public open space is the prime asset and selling point of the location. The identified open spaces' physical problematic conditions, positive and negative impacts of the current urban open spaces to the surrounding environments instigate recommendations and address with the stakeholders. As the city grows, continuing to value urban open spaces is vital and challenging, especially in the case of DWTC. The intention to be a seamless link strengthens the relations between the two developments within the DWTC campus through a seamless pedestrian but is not attractive and beneficial to its users. The identified current challenges and lacking components of the place of the study should be considered. Furthermore, problematic conditions of the area that are identified must be addressed with the stakeholders. A successful open space must reflect the diversify, be multi¬functional, encourage people to meet together effortlessly, and create a journey of experience. This attracts opportunities if it is well planned - for commercial investments, opportunities for common goods for the tourists, establishments, and the developer. The quality of space, physical organization, and mental comfort are tied to the image in any open destination. Therefore, based in problematic conditions of the area that are identified should be considered and addressed with the stakeholders. Create a guideline to guide the public space, particularly in the area of the study. These guidelines must be applied to the existing condition and based on the current best practices, a guideline for planning recommendations, code requirements, and the overall context for the functional spaces. Guidelines must be approved by the stakeholders, planning authority to use public entities and developers. In addition to compliance with the guidelines, design proposals and alternative solutions must be evaluated based on the surrounding context, site conditions, and how the project meets the plan goals, design principles and guidelines intent, and other studies and policies affecting the specific development site. Negative impacts that are highlighted in the result and discussion must be addressed. Design upgrade, following the key guidelines in order to create a quality-driven open space. Consider the context in the design of the urban space; public realm and landscape, defined spaces, and key view elements. Must also consider the identity, features like signages, public arts, and other features that significantly impact the surroundings. Another important is comfort - to make the public spaces comfortable and inviting. In addition, public space must address the elements of human scale and scenery by providing desirable amenities with a diversity of activities. It is essential to consider the checklist on how the public open space can be acceptable. Acceptability to achieve a quality of giving satisfaction sufficient to the demand or requirements. The satisfaction level must depend on what the users need, which relates to the people's doings and perceptions. Lastly, open spaces are distinguished by the difference in the materialization or the use of different types of landscape features and how to optimize the space's potential for the user, so there should always be something to look at. Therefore, for public open spaces to be successful, Stakeholders must provide a quality-driven open space that fits the demands of present and future users while also contributing to the betterment of the surrounding environment.
