University of the Cordilleras, Baguio City.https://dspace.uc-bcf.edu.ph/handle/123456789/218Before, nostalgia was believed to be a heavily gloomy experience. Almost all other people, however, are subject to the wish to return to where they have once been, which gives a normal quality to nostalgia. Subconsciously, pondering about the far away home, people, objects, and events in one's place of origin means a visit of memories and a visit of nostalgia. Hence, this study gives different dimensions of nostalgia through the lens of the selected nostalgic poems written by several Ilocano writers. Moreover, this study will benefit primarily AB English students because of a nostalgic poetry writing seminar- workshop designed and prepared for them. Lastly, this research will help the readers to travel back to their past, return to their homeland, and remember memories once more. This study is an attempt to construe nostalgia as exemplified in Aurelio Agcaoili's "Rekuerdo/Mementot Estrangement and Homing in Ilokano Poetics". Specifically, this study attempts to explore and ferret out answers to the following questions: 1. What ethnic identities are portrayed in Ilocano poetry? 2. How do the following poetic elements portray nostalgia along: a. Imagery 1. Sensory imagery 2. Literary imagery b. Style 1. Diction, and 2. Tone and mood 3. What nostalgic poetry writing seminar-workshop can be conducted for the students? To answer these questions, the researcher made use of the descriptive-content analysis research method. Specifically, the biographical approach, new criticism, psychoanalytic criticism, sociological and stylistic approaches were employed to analyze and to give light to the problems of this study. The following are the major findings of the study: 1. Ilocano people live a simple, rustic life; Food is one of their favorite topic of discussion; Ilocanos continue to work, appear to be contented and glad to live; Ilocanos celebrate the oneness of the Ilocano community; Ilocanos exude generosity; The Ilocanos are sociable and cooperative; The Ilocanos dream of a financially healthier life; Music has always been an integral part of the Ilocano life; Homeland is a source of life to Ilocano's ethnic identity; The genuine Ilocano identity never forgets its local root; The central activity in Ilocano economy is agriculture; Ilocanos celebrate the essence of Christmas even miles away from the homeland. 2. Figures of speech such as simile, metaphor, and personification are common in Ilocano nostalgic poetry. Diction helps to reinforce the nostalgic experience. Moreover, nostalgic is the tone of the selected poems although they vary in mood. 3. A nostalgic poetry writing seminar-workshop called A.P.P.E.A.L (Actions Promoting Power, Exploration, and Appreciation of Literature) thru Nostalgic Poetry Writing Seminar-Workshop was conducted for AB English students of the University of the Cordilleras to help them exercise creativity, develop literary writing interest, and promote the study of poetry through reminiscing personal nostalgic memories. In light of the findings of the study, the following are the conclusions: 1. Ilocanos, even abroad, firmly remain as pure-blooded Ilocanos and solid in their ethnic identity by becoming active members of an organization that promotes Ilocano language, culture, and literature and that highly reflects the unity of Ilocano people. 2. Imagery, diction, and mood are gateways for nostalgia in poetic writings. 3. Engaging students in a dynamic and innovative teaching of poetry brings excitement for the students to appreciate poetry even in the 21st century. In relation with the findings and conclusions of this research, the following are recommended: 1. A study that highlights Ilocano songs be made which can be another conduit to understand the Ilocano way of life. 2. The researcher recommends the promotion of literary studies that highly promote local cultures by choosing literary texts penned by Filipino writers. 3. For future researchers who intend to dwell on poetry, the researcher of this study recommends to conduct a series of exciting and fun related seminar-writing workshops to stress the drive to study and appreciate literature in the 21st century.en-USIlocano nostalgic poetryThesis
